Good Sam Extended Service Plan Reviewed

Did you stumble across the while looking for RV insurance? Not sure if you should get this insurance plan?

Well, you’re in luck! In this post, I’ll be reviewing the Good Sam Extended Service Plan in detail.

If you’re new to the RV life, it is essential to know that regular automobile insurance won’t cut it. You need special policies that cater to your camping needs as well.

In addition, RV insurances are unique- they vary depending on user needs and RV specifications. Therefore, it’s essential to do a little research before signing with an insurance company.

Below, you’ll find details regarding the Good Sam Extended Service Plan, from what the plan covers to estimated costs.

Is it worth getting the Good Sam Extended Service Plan? Well, keep reading, and you’ll find your answer!

What Exactly Is the Good Sam Extended Service Plan?

What Exactly Is the Good Sam Extended Service Plan? The Good Sam Extended Service Plan goes beyond your average RV warranty. It’s an insurance policy that offers quite a few services, including mechanical breakdown coverage.

Whether you want to insure a new or old RV, the Good Sam Extended Service Plan is designed to lower the costs of repairs and mechanical failures. Moreover, the policy is quite simple to understand.

In terms of basic coverage, Good Sam goes the extra mile by providing more services than your average RV insurance provider. These services include the following:

  • Collision
  • Personal and Property Damage Liability
  • Bodily Injury Liability
  • Comprehensive
  • Personal Injury Protection
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Protection

If you take a look at the RV specific policies that Good Sam offers, you’ll understand precisely why it’s one of the best RV insurance companies in the country.

Here are some things that Good Sam RV insurance plan covers:

  • Storage options
  • Full replacement cost coverage
  • Emergency medical and travel assistance
  • Personal effects coverage
  • Emergency expense coverage
  • Service coverage in US and Canada

While there are a few things the company doesn’t cover, such as injury insurance for your pet, it still offers one of the best RV insurance plans.

What Types of RVs Does the Good Sam Extended Service Plan Cover?

What Types of RVs Does the Good Sam Extended Service Plan Cover? While looking for RV insurance, it can be frustrating when you discover a good insurance plan, but it offers insurance for the type of RV you have.

However, you don’t have to worry about this problem with Good Sam. Compared to most RV insurance companies, Good Sam’s insurance plans cover a wider variety of RVs.

Here are some of the types of RVs it covers:

  • Class A, B, and C motorhomes
  • Conventional and Fifth-wheel trailers
  • Truck campers
  • Pop-up trailers
  • Travel trailers
  • Toy haulers
  • Bus conversions

How Much Does the Good Sam Extended Service Plan Cost?

How Much Does the Good Sam Extended Service Plan Cost?As mentioned earlier, insurance policies are unique, depending on the RV and the owner’s requirements. You can get a quotation by either calling up the company or checking online.

Usually, you’ll be asked questions regarding your vehicle and the type of coverage you require. Depending on your response, you’ll get a quotation. Once you’ve locked in on the plan, the price remains the same for the initial three years.

As with most insurance policies, you’ll incur deductibles with this plan as well. Fortunately, this deductible applies to each occurrence and not to each repair.

For instance, if your RV brakes and shocks need a repair/replacement, you’ll pay a deductible once for the overall occurrence and not for each repair. The cost of the deductible can vary depending on your RV type.

On the plus side, if you don’t file in your insurance claim, the deductible remains low. If you go on without filing a claim, Good Sam offers a reduction on your deductible per year.

It also allows you to choose the deductible, the payment plan, and the way you pay. Moreover, you’re free to cancel the plan whenever you want, but more on that later.

What Are the Benefits of Getting this Plan?

What Are the Benefits of Getting this PlanNow, you know a little about the insurance plan, let’s look at some of the benefits of getting this plan.

Reliable

When looking for RV insurance plans, people often worry about scams and negligence. However, with the Good Sam Extended Service Plan, you have nothing to worry about.

Not only is this plan underwritten by QBE Insurance, but it is also bound to comply with all insurance rules and regulations. In addition, QBE has received an A+ rating from A.M Best and an A rating from Standard & Poor.

However, I advise taking a look at different policies as some warranties offer coverage for a specific number of miles covered annually.

Note: Due to particular state laws, Good Sam only provides a Vehicle Service Contract if you reside in the states of New York or Indiana.

Emergency Expense Coverage

It can be quite troublesome if your RV breaks down in the middle of a trip. However, if you’ve signed up for the Good Sam Extended Service Plan, you have nothing to worry about. Good Sam covers all emergency expenses in case of a breakdown during a trip.

The plan covers costs up to $100 for accommodation and meals for a maximum of five days while your RV is undergoing repairs. In addition, it also includes a maximum of $60 for travel expenses up to five days.

While this particular plan does not cover for towing, Good Sam has a separate plan, the Good Sam Roadside Assistance Plan, which does offer the facility.

Works for New or Used RVs

Typically, people get extended warranties for their RVs once the Manufacturer’s Warranty expires as the manufacturer covers most of the components already.

However, getting this plan for a new RV ensures that your coverage doesn’t lapse–it’s like additional protection. If your vehicle is new, you can get the insurance at a lower cost.

The manufacturer’s warranty can cover different components depending on the company and the type of RV. Before you lock in on the plan, I suggest taking a close look at which items your manufacturer covers.

Transferable

Another benefit of this plan is that it is completely transferable. If you decide to sell your RV and get a new vehicle, you can transfer the insurance on to your new vehicle. Furthermore, if the new owner of your old RV decides to continue the Extended Service Plan, they can do so without any additional charges.

Reimbursement for Cancellation

If you change your mind, you can easily cancel your insurance plan. If you cancel within the initial 30 days of the plan, you’ll get back 100% of your premium. However, any claims that were paid during the period will not be compensated.

On the other hand, if you cancel after the 30 days time limit, the reimbursement will be based on the pro-rata amount for the remaining months. You’ll also have to pay a cancellation fee of $50.

However, these cancellation charges can be waived off in case of transfer to a different vehicle.

Appliance Insurance

As with other RV insurance, the Good Sam Extended Service Plan covers your RV appliance. So, if your RV dishwasher or refrigerator breaks down, the insurance plan covers the repairs.

Alternatively, if you wish to purchase a new appliance in place of the broken one, you can do so. For instance, the repair of your RV dishwasher costs around $400, and you’d rather get a new one instead of fixing the old one. The estimated costs for the repair can be used to purchase a new dishwasher.

What Are the Cons of the Good Sam Extended Service Plan?

What Are the Cons of the Good Sam Extended Service Plan? So, are there any downsides to getting this plan?

While overall, this insurance plan offers great coverage and is quite reliable, there are a few downsides.

Customer Service Can Be Unresponsive

Firstly, the customer service department can be a bit unresponsive at times. On occasions, it can take a little longer than usual to reach customer service.

In case you need a repair and can’t reach customer service, you can follow the steps highlighted in the plan to get your repairs. Though, you need to contact the insurance company within five days of the repairs to get reimbursed.

However, to avoid any complications, I recommend waiting until you can get authorization from Good Sam. This way, you can get direct payment from the company and won’t have to wait to get reimbursed.

Does Not Cover Routine Maintenance

Secondly, this plan does not cover daily maintenance for your RV. In fact, if you want complete coverage from Good Sam, you must regularly maintain your RV as per the manufacturer’s recommendation. Failure to do so might lead to the cancelation of your contract.

If you select a service provider recommended by Good Sam for regular maintenance, you can avail of a 10% percent discount. Just make sure to keep records and save all receipts from the maintenance.

Final Verdict

As with all products, there are pros and cons to the Good Sam Extended Service Plan. Firstly, I suggest that you figure out your requirements. Then thoroughly look into the services and coverage of the Good Sam Extended Service Plan offers.

After going through these steps, you’ll be able to judge yourself if this insurance plan suits your preferences.
