A lot of RVers I know with class A motorhomes are with the 80s, 90s, and 00s rigs that cost about 10k and less. Lots of others are all in old rigs; they paid cash.
See, buying an old class A RV makes more sense. An old class A RV is far cheaper than a new class A rig, especially if it’s a diesel pusher.
Also, nothing severely depreciates more than a brand-new anything. So, if you’re planning to get a class A motorhome, don’t buy new; let someone else take the depreciation hit.
With that out of the way, the next big question is what brands are to look at in the used class A market.
Better RV Brands to Look at in Class A
The big problem with choosing a used class A motorhome brand from a dealership is most RV sales staff lie. A coach or brand with the highest margin for them will always be the “best.” Not true.
In most cases, therefore, buying a used Class A RV is a crapshoot, and it’s either you get a good one, a dud, or something in the middle.
However, some used class A brands are noticeably better than others and hardly suffer from the problems most brands do.
From experience, Newmar and Tiffin provide the nicest used class A quality without getting into the high-end customizable levels of used Class As.
The materials used by these brands are better quality, solid wood for cabinets, real metal faucets instead of plastic, etc.
While most chassis on these models are similar, the built quality makes the difference, especially in the durability and comfort department.
A caveat is they cost more but not anywhere close to the $2M for a Prevost conversion.
Of course, there’re several other top-quality brands for used Class A motorhomes are no longer in business, such as the American or Country Coach. You shouldn’t ignore them if you find a model with a layout you like.
I also like Winnebago because it offers solid middle-of-the-line coaches.
Used Class A RV Brand- My Pick (Newmar)
This might be anecdotal, but it’s another +1 for Newmar. We’ve been in 5th wheeler for a while, and when we started shopping for a used class A RV, Newmar was at the top of my list because my folks had an 80s Newmar Kounty Aire.
It was the unkillable 90’s Toyota Camry of that era and came with magnificent cabinetry, appliances, and solid build quality.
Was it the best of its time?
Far from it. As with many used class A RVs, it had quality problems from time to time, but sticking with a reputable brand, meant we reduced our chances of too many defects.
Look, brands like Newmar are priced for a reason. Their engineering, design, and material are cut above the run-of-the-mill brands.
Nothing will jump out as unique or different about Newmar used class A rigs, but I always like their styling, build quality, and performance.
Their rigs, especially in the class A market, are awesome in every possible way, and I would feel safe assuring my readers to get Newmar’s used class A models.
But this isn’t to say there won’t be problems. Think about buying a new car, rig, or home. They all come with inherent troubles. But if you’re patient and correct the issues, you’ll get many years of enjoyment.

Newmar Kountry Star- Our Choice
Topping our list of the best Newmar class A motorhomes is the Newmar Kountry Star. It ticks most boxes for the best class A RVs, and it’s not surprising that it has so many positive reviews among the adherent RVers.
Reliability, performance, and quality interior are probably the key selling points of the Newmar Kountry Star.
This diesel pusher sits on a Freightliner XCR chassis, so you can confidently drive your RV. The chassis provides a solid foundation for your motorhome and enhances overall durability. This is key when you need some serious off-roading.
Size-wise, the Newmar Kountry Star is available in two sizes, 37 or 40 feet. It’s the standard length for the average class A RV, but I suggest the 40 feet option if you need a more spacious cabin. The 40 feet option is also great for those with families.
The Newmar Kountry Star interior is also incredible, and I love it because it’s more than a basic cabin. It includes all the essentials you would need to live off-grid in your RV, including a fully-equipped kitchen and LED TV.

Overall, the Newmar Kountry Star is an awesome pick for the casual RVer. It’s not premium and may not have the bells and whistles of some of the expensive used class A RVs, but it’s functional and works exactly as advertised.

If you need to head out into the woods but still enjoy the creature comforts of your home, consider a used Newmar Dutch Star.
One of the things I like most about this model is that it’s available in different floor layout plans, 13 to be specific. Furthermore, some of the layouts are even wheelchair accessible. Talk of convenience!
The Newmar Dutch Star is also a behemoth, and everything & every room on this travel trailer is spacious. It comes 37 feet in length and is the perfect choice for those who need to RV with family, friends, or a group of people. It can sleep up to 5 adults.
The interior of Dutch Star doesn’t disappoint. It has all the amenities needed for an extended stay in the woods. Some notable features include a recessed gas stove, workstation, pantry shelve, drawers, and much more.

The model has some exciting tech advancements designed to make your stay in the RV more convenient. For example, it sports proprietary Comfort Drive adapted steering and Connected Diagnostics. These features make your drive more intuitive and maintenance less hassle.

However, it doesn’t feel claustrophobic or anything. It’s spacious and airy. Furthermore, it has two slide-outs, which is nice when you need extra space parked.
Also, I like that the RV is available in five different floor plans, so you can always pick a plan that suits your family space needs. The design makes it easy to design your living area according to your needs.
Performance-wise, the Bay Star Sport retains the legendary quality and functionality you would expect from a Newmar coach.
For starters, it is exclusively built on a Ford F-Series chassis, which is necessary for longevity, solid design, and reliable ride.
